The Way of Courage is about Mia, a young female raccoon. She is just over four months old and is half-grown. Although Mia is a raccoon, she is as individual and unique as any child in any classroom. The children in a classroom share qualities and characteristics that are typical of the human species called Homo sapiens. Mia has qualities and characteristics typical of her species, Procyon lotor. Half-grown Mia, is excited. She is leading her families hunt for the first time. Unexpectedly her entire world changes and she finds herself alone in the unknown. Mia knows she will survive. The question is How? Mia discovers that the how of her survival is largely up to her. This happy ending, hair-raising, adventure ends wonderfully.

The book also contains the reader's own personal Field Study Guide and directions on how to safely observe and record the creatures they observe in the nature that surrounds them.
