This novel is different from most of Shute's other novels because it is set in the future. The place is still Australia, Melbourne, but the world he creates is unlike anything we currently know. There has been a nuclear war. Everything in the Northern Hemisphere has been wiped out and the lethal radiation is slowly drifting towards Australia and New Zealand. Everyone knows it is coming and that they will die, but they face the situation in many different ways.
