Unlike many of Kjelgaard's other books, this volume can be classified as American history, because the characters are real and the events described based on fact. Kjelgaard has fictionalized episodes based on probability rather than imagination. This collection of short stories introduces us to a group of men who through their daring and bravery, opened up new areas of the American West, off the usual track of the pioneers.
