Seyla Benhabib's The Rights of Others offers an insightful consideration of the question of political membership in a globalized world. Legal and political practices that draw distinctions between 'us' and 'them' remain an intellectual puzzle with urgent real world implications. By critically interrogating the nature of the rules of inclusion and exclusion, Benhabib offers a defence of the rights of migrants and refugees that challenges their perpetual "otherness" in liberal democratic states. Recognizing the porousness of borders, Benhabib argues for a right to political membership for all persons regardless of his or citizenship status.
