David's ability to spin a yarn gets him invited to attend a Cowboy Poetry Gathering, despite being neither cowboy nor poet. When a murder occurs before he can even unpack his gumshoe kit, he wonders if his presence was premediated for other reasons.

He takes a moonshine to one of the dubious cast of famous cowboy wanabees, and enjoys the distraction of an old friend, Louise. But David needs to keep his wits about him—the spurs are out, and the Wild West continues to deliver on its reputation for lawlessness as more of the cast are killed.
