THE JUDGING PANEL

THE 2020 WINNERS • ‘This year, judges were brought to tears by the selflessness, devotion and resourcefulness of the UK’s wine retailers,’ recalls competition chairman Peter Richards MW. ‘This speaks volumes about how challenges have been met and, in many cases, overcome in style by purveyors of wine all over the country. It’s also why we were determined to hold these awards: to honour these achievements in adversity. Thanks to the entrants, we were able to raise £25,000 for The Drinks Trust and The Ben charities. Wine may not be the most important thing in life, but it’s at times like these we learn to value such pleasures and moments more than ever.’

The top 20 sparkling wines of 2020 • Of the 1,677 sparkling wines judged at DWWA 2020, just 20 (1.2%) received the competition's top accolades of Best in Show or Platinum. Receiving a minimum of 97 points, this year's top-scoring sparkling wines from across the globe give reason to celebrate- and just in time for the holidays...

MY TOP 50: RHONE WINES UNDER £20 • Reliable, versatile and food-friendly, the wines of the Rhône valley remain a go-to for excellent value from France – but which bottles deliver the best quality for their price? We asked Matt Walls to survey what’s to be found on the market currently and select his own top 50

WOMEN OF CHAMPAGNE • A woman, in charge of production at a Champagne house? Not so long ago, the idea would have raised many an eyebrow in this traditional region. Happily the wine world has moved on and female chefs de cave and consultants are firmly in place at some of the most prestigious producers. Anne Krebiehl MW highlights the work and philosophies of eight of them

MY TOP 10: SINGLE QUINTAS • Visitors to the region are invariably stunned by the beauty of Portugal’s Douro Valley, with its deep but serene river and dramatically terraced slopes. Richard Mayson selects 10 great Port properties and explains what makes them and their wines so memorable

WAIRARAPA • Burgundy lovers, take note: four decades in, the vineyard areas at the southern end of New Zealand’s North Island have developed a growing reputation for excellent quality and vineyard expression, and for characterful Pinot Noirs in particular. Oliver Styles tells the region’s story, and explains why the best may...
