INTRODUCTION • THE COLOUR ISSUE

The World of Interiors

antennae • What’s in the air this month, edited by Nathalie Wilson

antennae roundup • From lime green to lilac, bright blue to banana yellow, Max Egger picks pieces bound to tickle your palette

SOUTHERN COMFORTERS • The women of Gee’s Bend, Alabama, have been stitching quilts for generations. And while the designs may be based on traditional patterns, each of these interpretative ‘my way’ pieces is peculiarly rooted in this remote pocket of the South, where their makers’ enslaved ancestors once harvested the cotton that made the country rich. But as well as being potent reminders of the past, there’s much joy to be found in these crafted artworks, which stand as bright symbols of a community’s creativity and resilience. Amy Sherlock uncovers some quilty secrets

BOLSTER CONFIDENCE • Sometimes the least likely bed (or couch) fellows can make for inspired double acts, as seen in the daring fabric pairings on the following pages. Mustard and lavender? Crimson and jade? Why ever not? Simply pick two colours and plump up the contrast, careful not to cushion the impact. Don’t be shy, says Max Egger.

SERIOUS pursuits • Auctions, antique fairs and diverting activities, chosen by Gareth Wyn Davies

THE COLOUR COLLECTIVE • Whether you’re looking for paints or fine linen, stackable chairs or ceramics, why not brighten up your interior and enhance your mood in the process. The World of Interiors presents brands that offer a who’s hue of seductive shades – palettes to suit every palate

books • Christmas roundup, chosen by Damian Thompson

HAUTE HUES • Atelier Mériguet-Carrère has supplied paints to presidents, adorned some of France’s most prestigious buildings and been picked by tastemakers to decorate their inner sanctums. Perhaps now’s the time for WoI’s readers to have a brush with the very best

FLYING COLOURS • As anyone with the decorating bug knows, if a scheme is to take off you need a palette that’s a mite special. Well, no flies on us! Paint shades of a whole new order are just our domain, whether it’s cochineal, leaf green or mushroom. Marshalling myriad specimens, Maude Smith has neatly – nay, taxonomically – classified all the options. Total genus!

network • Sophia Salaman chooses the best merchandise and events worldwide

ADDRESS book

CONTROLLED EXPLOSIONS • In the Bloomsbury penthouse he shares with horticulturalist Charlie McCormick, Ben Pentreath has shown why he’s a big noise in interior design. Confident to undermine classical colour verities, he’s painted his corridor coral, kitchen orange and flower room lime green. Pattern vies with pattern too, but though one’s eye is constantly lit up, he’s no loose cannon – indeed, Ruth Guilding is pleasantly shell-shocked.

WHOSE HUE? • A sale at an auction house in North Yorkshire brings together 170 historic sample books from mostly unknown, mainly French, manufacturers alongside the watercolour motifs of 19th-century fabric designer John Barker, perhaps Manchester’s most prolific freelancer. But, whether Persian paisleys or plush velvets, what’s striking about both collections are the punchy colours and graphic dynamism of so many of these century-old swatches and sketches. Dour Victorians? Gareth Wyn Davies demurs from the description
