Editor's Letter

"The Sea Stirs" • They say everything is pre-destined. Maybe so, but you have to push relentlessly like a crazy person to make it happen

“By Any Other Name- part 1” • This issue's main special feature will again delve in great detail into the preparation and development of the drawing done especially for the front cover from beginning to end but this time with special emphasis on compositional aspects.

“Basic Drawing Techniques” • You just can't beat a good foundation to build on when it comes to freehand drawing. Establishing good habits from the start through practise is a lot easier than trying to change bad ones further down the line.

“Fudging and Squirling- part 1” • Fudging and squrling are advanced techniques that are the secret to drawing freehand hyper-realism. They just don't work without the right foundation though so this four part article not only deals with the techniques themselves but what you have to do to prepare the ground for them to work properly.

“Shades of Grey” • I have written about hatching and crosshatching before (DWBJ- Vol. 1) but I am going to keep adding to it as we go along as it’s such an important and integral part of my style of freehand drawing.

"Artist Survival Skills- part 1"

“Handling The Tools” • To do the hyper-realistic representational style I favour most there are only six tools. They are; 2B pencil, pencil extender, pencil sharpening knife, scratch board, vinyl eraser, and rubber trimming knife

“Fudging and Squirling- part 2”

“By Any Other Name-part 2”

“Drawing What You See” • Time to explain one of the most important aspects of all when it comes to sketching and drawing freehand.

“The Beginning and the End” • The start and finish of any highly detailed freehand drawing have to be approached and addressed in a quite different way to the majority of the project.

“Fudging and Squirling- part 3”

"Artist Survival Skills- part 2"

“Belief” • Art and beliefs are inexorably entwined. By the same token both should always be open and able to be modified and built upon as life experience and skill level increases.

“Fixing to Finish”

“Fudging and Squirling- part 4”

“By Any Other Name- part 3”

“The Tundra”
