In 1918 the liner Princess Sophia sank in Alaska, and all aboard perished. When a letter from a passenger on the ill-fated ship is delivered in 1968 Vancouver, it raises a mystery that begs to be solved.

The recipient, Elizabeth Hadley now a lady in her seventies, hires sailor and amateur detective Sean Gray to lead and expedition to Thomas Bay, the fabled Bay of Devils.

Sean tracks down Cindy Lu, the clever waitress who found and delivered the letter. He convinces her to join the crew of Lady L, Lizzie's classic motor yacht, as cook.
