Tolstoy had a very peculiar view of conjugal life and in this novel, where a married woman ends by betraying her husband with the lover with who she plays Beethoven's Kreutzer Sonata, the author tries to show that the sensual part of marriage is of no importance. This idea can be discussed but the brilliant description of human beings and of the torments of jealousy, put the writer among the main authors of universal literature. Here Tolstoy leaves apart the epic construction of others of his works y concentrates in human beings and their problems.
