Vanity finds its fate within itself. The development of vanity is constantly threatened by those logical objections which develop out of the communal life. Social and communal life are absolute principles which are undefeatable. Vanity, therefore, is forced to hide at a very early period of its development, disguise itself, and make detours to accomplish its end. The vain individual will always be prey to grave doubts as to his ability to achieve the victories which it would seem his vanity demands; while he dreams and ponders, time flies. And when the time has gone, our vain one has the alibi that he never had an opportunity to show what he could do.
