Killer of Witches is a powerful story; it is the other side of Apache history, lived by a people fighting the tsunami of westward migration and drawn from the deep terrors of their supernatural beliefs. On a cold night in November 1865, at General James H. Carlton's Bosque Redondo concentration camp near Fort Sumner, New Mexico, five hundred Mescalero Apaches disappear like ghosts in the wind. The Army never finds them. One of them, a five-year-old boy, becomes a legend. Ussen, God, Creator of Life, gives to the boy gifts of power that include an ability to send witches to the Happy Place, their spirits wandering forever in darkness; an immunity to ghost sickness; and his name, Yellow Boy. Yellow Boy uses his gifts in his search for a witch called Blood of the Devil, whose head looks like a skull, and whose body is covered with black spiral and flame tattoos. He has lead Comanches and Mexican banditos in the murder and scalping of all but a small remnant of Yellow Boy's band. The hunt for Blood of the Devil is an odyssey that takes Yellow Boy across the deserts, canyons, and mountains of the American southwest and the Mexican states of Sonora and Chihuahua, and it is filled with tests of the boy's skill, courage, and determination.
