THE VIKING A350: THE SUSTAINABLE SCANDINAVIAN FLAGSHIP • Before the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc in the global commercial aviation industry, all the financial forecasts and earnings expectations had been nothing short of record-breaking for the vast majority of the world’s biggest carriers.
KELLY LEPLEY
THE PIEDMONT AIRLINES STORY PART ONE: ROUTE OF THE PACEMAKERS • Just after 0700 on February 20, 1948, a Douglas DC-3 bearing the registration NC37468 and christened Kanawha River Pacemaker lifted off from the runway of the airport at Wilmington, North Carolina, bound for Southern Pines, Charlotte, and Asheville – all in the Tar Heel State – then on to the Tri-Cities (Kingsport and Johnson City, Tennessee; Bristol, Tennessee/Virginia), Lexington, Kentucky, and, finally, Cincinnati, Ohio.
Foundations • Captain Justin Schlechter began his airborne life at age 14, flying out of Republic Airport on Long Island. With more than 11,000 hours aloft, his airline experience has taken him from the tight confines of LaGuardia in Embraer ERJ145s to the glittering metropolis of Hong Kong and to the Far East in Boeing 747-400s, to the controlled chaos of Atlanta in McDonnell Douglas MD-88s, and to the sunny shores of Florida in Airbus A321s. If he is not flying or writing about flying, he can be found somewhere talking about it, hopefully on a Florida layover. He lives with his family on Long Island.
Changes • Clayton Taylor started out as a Flight Instructor before becoming an Air Traffic Controller. Currently, he holds seven aircraft type ratings and is a certified weather observer. Clayton also has a control tower operator’s certificate with an area radar rating. He flies as Captain on the Airbus A320 and was First Officer on the Airbus A330 for a major US airline. He lives in Texas.
